Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing is repeatedly disrupted during sleep, often without you even realising it.

This can occur in two ways. In obstructive sleep apnea, the airway becomes partially or fully blocked during sleep, restricting normal airflow. In central sleep apnea, the brain fails to send the appropriate signals to the muscles that control breathing.

The result? Your body is deprived of deep, restorative sleep, leaving you feeling exhausted, unfocused, and drained, no matter how many hours you spend in bed.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder characterised by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These pauses in breathing can last from a few seconds to minutes and may occur multiple times per hour, preventing you from reaching deep, restorative rest.

There are three common forms of Sleep Apnea:

Central Sleep Apnea

Central Sleep Apnea

When the brain doesn’t properly signal your breathing muscles, leading to pauses or shallow breathing during sleep,

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

The most frequent type, triggered by physical blockages in the airway caused by relaxed throat muscles.

Mixed Sleep Apnea

Mixed Sleep Apnea

A combination of both central and obstructive elements, requiring a specialised approach.

Dr Pang's surgical procedure

Pang’s Expansion Pharyngoplasty

Developed by Dr Kenny Pang in 2007, this surgical technique addresses Obstructive Sleep Apnea by enlarging the upper airway. Through customised rotation and reinforcement of the throat muscles and soft tissues, it aims to reduce airway blockages and support more consistent breathing during sleep.

Published outcome – 18-year meta-analysis

80%+

Success rate in snoring patients, published in an international peer-reviewed journal

What it addresses

Airway obstruction during sleep

The procedure targets the region of the throat where airway collapse most commonly occurs in Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

How it works

Customised muscle repositioning

Key throat muscles are carefully adjusted and reinforced to widen the airway and reduce the likelihood of collapse during sleep.

Who it may be suitable for

Patients assessed for surgical intervention

Suitability is determined through consultation and, where appropriate, a sleep study to confirm the type and severity of sleep apnea

Additional Solutions to Support Restful Nights

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)

A device delivering steady, pressurized air through a mask to keep your airway open all night.

Oral Appliances

Custom-fitted devices designed to reposition your jaw or tongue forward, helping minimize airway obstruction.

Nose, Palate, or Tongue Surgery

Various surgical techniques that address structural issues contributing to snoring or breathing interruptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Snoring is the sound caused by vibration of tissues in the upper airway during sleep. Sleep apnoea, particularly obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), is a medical condition in which the airway becomes narrowed or blocked repeatedly during sleep, causing breathing to reduce or stop for short periods. While snoring is a common symptom of OSA, not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea.

You should consider medical assessment if you have loud habitual snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep, choking or gasping at night, morning headaches, unrefreshing sleep, or persistent daytime tiredness. A review may also be important if you have high blood pressure or other health concerns together with symptoms suggestive of sleep-disordered breathing.

The most suitable treatment depends on several factors, including the severity of the sleep apnoea, your symptoms, the site of airway obstruction, your anatomy, and whether you are likely to benefit from non-surgical or surgical treatment. A specialist evaluation, and where needed a sleep study, helps determine the most appropriate treatment approach for you.

Many patients experience better sleep within the first few weeks, depending on the treatment and their individual response.
We offer non-surgical, minimally invasive strategies whenever possible. Discomfort is generally minimal and manageable.
It depends on your diagnosis, personal preferences, and overall progress. Some individuals only require short-term support, while others may benefit from ongoing use.
