Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between snoring and sleep apnea?
Snoring is the sound caused by vibration of tissues in the upper airway during sleep. Sleep apnoea, particularly obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), is a medical condition in which the airway becomes narrowed or blocked repeatedly during sleep, causing breathing to reduce or stop for short periods. While snoring is a common symptom of OSA, not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea.
When should I see a doctor for suspected sleep apnea?
You should consider medical assessment if you have loud habitual snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep, choking or gasping at night, morning headaches, unrefreshing sleep, or persistent daytime tiredness. A review may also be important if you have high blood pressure or other health concerns together with symptoms suggestive of sleep-disordered breathing.
How do I know which sleep apnea treatment is suitable for me?
The most suitable treatment depends on several factors, including the severity of the sleep apnoea, your symptoms, the site of airway obstruction, your anatomy, and whether you are likely to benefit from non-surgical or surgical treatment. A specialist evaluation, and where needed a sleep study, helps determine the most appropriate treatment approach for you.
